Politics And Stuff

Podcast and Al Franken

I have been listening to a news podcast called The Takeaway. I get the rss feed, and let the files build up until there is enough to fill up a DVD, so I am a bit behind. I am listening to the programs from early July. A couple of days ago I listened to one with a few segments about Al Franken.

Update on Health Insurance

I signed up for COBRA yesterday. It turns out I misinterpreted the information I got in the mail. The subsidy covers 65% of the cost and I only pay 35%. The subsidy lasts for nine months, and COBRA coverage lasts for eighteen months. The proper cost table is below.

Calculating Health Insurance Costs

Like many people, I had health insurance through my employer. I was recently laid off from Megabux Corporation, and got a few months of severance. The severance also included my health benefits.

Put Not Your Trust in Princes

So now George W is leaving the stage. Back in 2000, Republicans said if Al Gore was elected, the USA would go into a ditch. For once, they were right about something.

Notes on a Peak Oil Speech

This is another article that was published 2006-10-03 00:47:32 Tuesday on the static portion of this site.

Elite-Bashing by an Elitist

This was originally published 2008-06-11 19:22:22 Wednesday on the static portion of this site. I am now moving some of that content onto the dynamic portion of the site. This was going to be part of a section called "Random Thoughts". (The alternative title: "Logical Thoughts at Random Intervals".) I was going to add articles as I wrote them, but then I decided that I might as well just use blogging or CMS software for more frequent posts. I still keep my photos on that part of the site.

Thoughts on auto bailout

The Detroit automakers have been in the news a lot asking for a bailout. (Maybe they should have asked for loans instead.) I am going back and forth on whether or not the government should loan them money.

Posts from the Culture Wars

Here are a few comments I left at Ed Brayton's blog Dispatches from the Culture Wars, a blog hosted at Science Blogs.

Class Warfare and Republican Morality on Atheist Revolution

The "Politics And Stuff" category is a bit thin, so for now I will post this article there instead of in "Posts From Other Sites". Here is a comment I left at Atheist Revolution for the post "Class Warfare" and Republican Morality. I left a couple of comments there, so another post will follow.

Post On Regulation

Note: I originally wrote this before I hosed my WordPress site, which was after Bank Of America bought Merrill Stench, but before the big Bailout of Wall Street.

Many conservatives have long been against regulation, particulary of the finance industry. They have fought it (Phil Gramm), tried to dismantle it (Bush Administration), and even ignored it while in power (Alan Greenspan). They have said that regulation could slow the growth rate of the economy.
